Biography

NYW picture With seven years of web operations management experience, nine years of online community development experience, eleven years of web design and administration experience, and nineteen years of internet, research and database experience, Noreen Whysel is a true internet veteran.

Noreen is currently serving as Operations Manager for the Information Architecture Institute and as a consultant to the Municipal Art Society, Behind the Book and the American Museum of Natural History on web design and usability projects. She has worked as an operations manager for Pricewaterhousecoopers' global website, a researcher/librarian with Price Waterhouse's real estate advisory group, and a bibliographic assistant at Columbia University's School of Library and Information Science. In addition, Noreen has served on the board of a not-for-profit web design organization and continues to be active in a number of professional organizations in the fields of website development, information architecture and usability.

Noreen is involved with the Information Architecture Institute on the Mentoring, Education and Job Board committees. She is a long-standing coordinating member of GISMO, a NYC-based Geographic Information Systems users' group, and has been leading their online community activities since 1996. Noreen is also active on the Board of Columbia College Women (CCW), an alumnae association, and the Friends of Columbia Sailing. She chairs the CCW Mentoring Committee, matching students with alumnae mentors.

While serving on the board of Virtuous Reality Interactive, Inc., a not-for-profit web design and education initiative, Noreen participated in the education of middle school students on the Pine Ridge Reservation near Rapid City, South Dakota. This experience and her experience with the Municipal Art Society and GISMO have been valuable in her pursuit of online community development projects.

Noreen has an undergraduate degree in Psychology from Columbia University and has completed continuing education courses in web design and multimedia at New York University and the International Webmasters Association. She completed an Oracle database course and holds an International Webmasters Association certificate in Web Technologies, covering HTML/XHTML, CSS, XML and Web Accessibility.
