Doodles

I am a hands on learner. The best way for me to develop a skill is to roll up my sleeves and create something from scratch. The Doodles below are websites and other projects that I created either as a way of learning a new technology or just for fun. I am currently working on summarizing a few of my more recent endeavors. Enjoy.

IA Institute Volunteer Wiki (2010)
Drupal wiki.
With the help if Institute founder and volunteer, Michael Angeles, I have been developing a volunteer wiki to replace the older Projects wiki that provided project information, resources and direction to folks working on the various initiatives of the IA Institute. It's a work in progress and will be fully functional when the member database is integrated with our Drupal installation.

@IAisIN (2010)
Twitter feed.
As an offshoot of the IA Institute's annual and ever-popular Mentoring Booth at the IA Summit (lovingly curated by Eric Reiss for many years), I began experimenting with a live online feed of who's sitting in the booth. I'm working on a pilot project to use the @IAisIN twitter feed as an ongoing guest mentoring feature of the IA Institute, modeled after Dan Brown's Campfire chats a few years earlier.

GISMONYC (2004)
Movable Type blog.
I am redesigning the GISMO website with blog features. Currently we post program notes from past presentations and upcoming events. These could be treated as categories on a blog and a news scan feature would make the site much more dynamic and useful.

Sprouting at the Mouth (2004)
Movable Type Blog.
This blog was created as part of a Movable Type blogging class. It is intended to be a jump-started version of ...beansproutings, an earlier Blogger-based site.

Lyr-Icks: A Shrine to Unintentionally Bad Songwriting (1998)
Javascript, interactive design, animated GIF, HTML editing.
I set up this award-winning site as a way to practice javascript. It was very fun to do, and so far has garnered a lot more attention than it is worth. If you like Celine Dion, you probably shouldn't look here...

Pia's Thai Catering (1996)
Research, interactive design, user interface, graphics
I created a website for Pia Chantarasmi's Thai Catering business, including sample menus. The catering service is no longer available, but the food was heavenly. In fact, Pia's sister, Nisa, has started Thai At Home, a catering service serving the New York City region. I didn't work with Nisa on her site, but her food so good, a link is more than appropriate!

Songs and Poems of Eugene Leo Wachs (1996)
Research, interactive design, user interface, graphics
I created this site as a Christmas present for my family. It is a collection of songs and poems that were found in my grandfather's desk after he passed away.
